Remember remember!

Sorry for the long hiatus, peepals! Here's a question to start things all over again!

The appearance of a particular element in one of X's most famous works, was initially interpreted as incorporating Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity. However, X was actually inspired by the perception of the item, shown below, melting in the sun. 


Who is X, and which work are we talking about?
